Barter Etiquette

Barter EtiquetteAs in all industries, the world of barter has certain protocols that should be followed but not everyone knows what they are. These are the most important protocols that should be followed regarding barter etiquette.

  1. Always leave a minimum of 15% cash gratuity to food servers, limo drivers, hair stylists, nail techs, massage therapists and anyone in the service or hospitality industry. These people depend on tips in the world of cash sales and the same applies to barter as well.
  2. Sales tax is always paid for in cash
  3. Always announce yourself as a TBG member prior to arranging services or purchasing goods.
  4. When you confirm an appointment with a fellow TBG member please keep the appointment. A last minute cash customer does not take precedence once an appointment has been confirmed.
  5. No price gouging. Barter is always fair retail to fair retail.
  6. Only provide service for what you are trained and licensed to do. Please do not use TBG members as experiments for your hobbies.
  7. Use the currency of the trade group that has facilitated your sale. Please do not ask members if they belong to other barter exchanges and then switch currencies after the deal has been negotiated.
  8. Do not try to convince other members to join competitive barter exchanges while attending TBG events.
  9. Use the proper gift certificates and/or restaurant scrip to the vendor that you are purchasing from. If you do not have the proper form of payment then pay cash.
  10. Do not hand off expired restaurant scrip to the food server and then leave.
  11. Restaurant scrip and gift certificates expire in 30 days and can not be reissued, refunded or exchanged
  12. Read the Membership Application carefully before signing so you are aware of the fee plan.
